A Royal Stag and Hen do: <br>Madame Tussauds LATES

Unless you’ve been hiding under a rock, you will all be aware that there was a high case of ‘Royal Wedding Fever’ that swept over the British nation, as the biggest celebration of the year took place last Saturday, 19th May.  The hugely anticipated Royal Wedding of Prince Harry and Meghan Markle took place in Windsor, for which approximately 2 billion people from around the world tuned in to watch!  Now, it may come as no surprise that I did not receive an invitation to the wedding.  But, what if I told you I received an invitation to their Hen and Stag do? Well not quite, but I did get invited down to the Royal Hen and Stag party at Madame Tussauds in London, where the amazing wax figures of the newly-wed royals have finally arrived!

Madame Tussauds Lates are adult only events that are held regularly throughout the year. You can enjoy VIP after-hour access to this top London attraction, with the added bonus of no queues, no kids, and a complimentary glass of prosecco.  The event was put on by Merlin Events, who are the official event management company for London’s premium five star event venues.  They host everything from corporate parties, bar mitzvahs, award ceremonies, and after work events at top London attractions.

With a free glass of bubbly on arrival, and our own cupcake version of the Royal’s lemon and elder-flower wedding cake, we headed for the ‘party room’ where their Royal Likenesses ‘Meghan and Harry’ stood romantically under a flowered archway.  The attention to detail was incredible and included a replica of her stunning engagement ring!

With over 200 wax figures, we had a lot of people to see, so after mingling with celebs such as Eddie Redmayne, Benedict Cumberbatch, and my husband to be Leonardo DiCaprio, we continued our journey through the exhibition.  What I loved about Madame Tussauds was how each celebrity had been categorised into a particular theme, making it easy to navigate your way around.  Themes included a sports section that contained Olympic heroes from around the world such as Jessica Ennis, Mo Farrah, and Usain Bolt, and a forest set which included the wax figures of Jennifer Lawrence as Katniss from the Hunger Games, Shrek, and a terrifying life-size version of King Kong.

The music section was one of my highlights, as not only did you get to chill out with stars such as Beyoncé, Britney, and The Beatles, but you also have the opportunity to take on the role of a judge on the well-known TV show ‘The Voice’.  We took our place on the famous spinning chairs to listen to a variety of singers that are played on a screen behind.  When we heard someone we liked, we got to press the big red button and spin around!

Further ahead, you approach the ‘royalty section’ which includes a selection of Kings and Queens who have reigned over Britain throughout the ages.  I’m not quite sure how Henry VIII made it in for his measurements however….

There’s a great photo opportunity from the royal balcony, where you can practise your wave alongside the royal family.  Unfortunately for us, we have quite a long way to go in terms of etiquette; I look like I’m at a rave event, and my friend looks like she’s unscrewing a lightbulb!

Also included in this wonderful exhibition is the ‘Marvel’ section which includes figures such as Spiderman and The Incredible Hulk, as well as a 4D cinematic experience.  We ended up with the whole cinema to ourselves which was pretty cool, and enjoyed a private viewing of The Avengers saving the day at Buckingham Palace.

Finally, we made our way to the Star Wars section.  Now, I’ve only started watching Star Wars this year (I know, I know), so I’ve only seen episodes IV, V, and VI, but was still able to appreciate being able to fly through hyperspace with Chewbacca and learn the ways of the force with Yoda.

As if the incredible wax works weren’t enough, there was even a ride!  Named the ‘Spirit of London’, visitors get the chance to hop inside a traditional black cab where they are taken through 400 years of London’s history.  Poignant historic moments include The Great Fire of London, the time of the Tudors, and the appointment of Winston Churchill as Prime Minister.

I can definitely say I have a new appreciation for the amount of effort, skill, and time it takes to create and perfect a wax figure.  There is a ‘Behind the scenes’ section for those wanting to learn more about what goes into the creating and assembling of each figure.  It’s very informative and guides you through each step of the waxwork construction process.

I would definitely recommend heading over to Madame Tussauds for a fun afternoon or evening out in London.  For those wanting to miss the crowds and the kids, Madame Tussauds Lates is a great ‘adult’ option.
