Disco Yoga: The glamorous way to bend & stretch

Disco Yoga: The glamorous way to bend & stretch

Despite having danced all my life, I am still probably one of the most inflexible people on the planet.  I have tried going to the gym, and the occasional run, but I just find exercise so dull! It’s one of the reasons I decided to dance as it’s so much more fun.  I’ve never tried yoga before which is weird considering it’s one of the biggest fitness crazes out there.  In fact, according to a recent study by Lancaster University, ‘yoga’ is now one of the top 15 most used words on British social media!  From ‘Doga’, which involves exercising alongside your pooch (I don’t have a dog), to ‘Hot Yoga’ which is performed in extremely humid conditions (no thank you), I still hadn’t found a class that would suit me. Enter Disco Yoga.

I was kindly invited to review one of their classes, which are held every Tuesday evening at Trapeze Bar, Old Street.  I brought my housemate Abi along to see what it was all about!

What is Disco Yoga?

Disco Yoga is the hottest new craze in town that targets millennial’s who are prioritising their health, but also have a social life to consider!  It’s for those who want to train hard, and party hard. Whether you are a first timer looking to unwind and socialise, a yoga aficionado, or purely a lover of Disco music, Disco Yoga caters to everyone.

Sarah Hunt, founder of Disco Yoga teaches the class (or one of her instructors if she is unavailable), talking you through some traditional moves (with an added disco twist), whilst DJ Darlo takes you to Boogie Wonderland, playing a glorious mix of disco classics to rejuvenate your mind, body, and soul.

Format of the night

We arrived at Trapeze Bar to find a room lined with yoga mats and a DJ booth in the corner.  We chose two mats beside each other and headed across the room for the glitter station! The glitter and sequins are all provided for you, and is a great opportunity to meet like-minded people before the class starts.  I went for the classic glitter around the eye look, complimented with a few jewels down my forehead.  I ended up getting way too excited by the sparkles and am not ashamed to say that I took it too far, and ended up dipping my lips into a pile of glitter resembling something out of Star Trek.

The class started at 7:30pm and began with a short meditation session, where we focused on our breathing and eliminated stressful energies from our body.  As we began to warm up, so did the music, and we began to get our disco on!

Our Disco Yoga class during the warm up

In addition to traditional yoga positions such as the ‘downward dog’, the ‘crow’, and some classic core workouts and stretches, there were of course, some added in ‘disco’ elements.  We performed some cool disco dance routines to songs such as ‘Upside Down’ by Diana Ross and ‘Stayin’ Alive’ by the Bee Gees, the 70’s classic ‘Young Hearts’ had everyone dancing their socks off, and songs such as ‘Kung Fu Fighting’, required us to stand on one leg and well….kung fu! It was definitely one of the most fun workouts I have had in a while, and the teachers were both so energetic and positive throughout, which really helped break the ice and kept everyone in good spirits.

Once order had been restored, it was time for the cool down.  The lights dimmed, and there was another 10 minute mediation session, which rounded off the hour perfectly.

After a great disco session, we headed upstairs to the bar, where a cocktail of our choice was waiting for us.  The cocktails were unique in that they offered extra health and beauty benefits, provided by their natural superfood ingredients.

I opted for ‘Blame it on the Blueberry’, served in its very own Disco Ball and Abi went for ‘Going Coco Down in Acapulco’, which was served in a real coconut shell.  Check out the descriptions below!

The drinks were delicious, and the fact they were healthy meant we could drink them guilt free!

Look, this combo right here is a winner!! Yoga is already essential, but then the knack of adding a little Donna Summer to the mix is a WIN-WIN!!! Not to mention the waiting cocktails afterwards?
